In my first job as a Director I recognized early on that I needed a coach. She was a true change navigator who supported and guided me as I steered the organization in a new direction. One day she asked me “What type of leader are you, a chicken or a duck? A chicken walks ahead of the chicks, while a duck walks behind the ducklings”. I thought for a moment, and replied smiling “a chuck”. As a leader with a strong vision orientation, I have learnt the hard way that I need to slow down and stay connected with my colleagues so we can move together.
