In the garden of values, norms and beliefs, culture is like the soil. Different soils nourish different varieties of plants and trees. So too, cultures are a rich blend of experience, history and community.

 

The principle of Ubuntu honours our interconnectedness as humans. Rooted in Africa, its relevance is universal. Listen to this poem by Phumzi Manana titled “Ubuntu, I am because we are”. 

 

Culture can unite us and divide us. A shared worldview creates a sense of belonging. Yet, when we challenge aspects of this worldview we risk being alienated. 

 

For cultures to survive they must adapt to changing circumstances. We can actively influence culture through creativity and innovation, leadership and advocacy, education and storytelling. 

 

Digital technology helps us to connect and understand each others’ languages. The flip side is that technology also creates divisions and polarization. Algorithms feed us content that we like, funnel us into a partial view of the world, and block out diverse perspectives.

 

Leaders in organizations are called to create a workplace culture in which all can thrive. What can you do to create a sense of belonging in this global village of ours?
